Financial strength

Any court award for clinical negligence is made against the doctor directly. He or she is personally liable for any damages and costs payable and depends on the support of a medical defence organisation to avoid potential hardship or even bankruptcy.

It may take years from the incident to resolution of a claim. You need to know that your defence organisation has access to funds, not just today, but in the future.

Most classes of membership include a Professional Indemnity Policy underwritten by SCOR UK Company Limited and by International Insurance Company of Hannover Limited. The policy indemnifies doctors for up to £10 million * and is backed by assets far in excess of the discretionary funds available to members of other mutual defence organisations.

MDU Services Limited, SCOR UK Company Limited and International Insurance Company of Hannover Limited are all regulated by the Financial Services Authority, who set very strict standards for the amount of funds companies need in reserve to ensure they meet all liabilities.

* subject to the terms and conditions of the policy
