Paramedics
Indemnity and medico-legal defence for paramedics from as little as £417 a year
- Who would you turn to if you receive a complaint or are sued?
- How would you pay a claim made against you?
- How would you defend yourself against a trust or regulatory body investigation?
- Where do you get advice on medico-legal and ethical issues?
You spend your professional career saving lives and helping others, yet, who will help you if a patient complains or sues you?
NHS indemnity is not enough
You may be covered by the NHS indemnity scheme, but if you do any private work and a patient is harmed as a result of your actions, the NHS indemnity scheme will not defend a claim against you or pay any compensation due.
Even if you work in the NHS, you cannot be sure that you will receive any support if you become involved in disciplinary action by your trust or regulatory body.
You too can be with the MDU
For over 120 years, the MDU has been defending doctors against allegations made against them. For the first time, paramedics can now have access to the same support that doctors have relied on.
Our membership package for paramedics includes:
- Professional indemnity insurance issued by SCOR Insurance (UK) Limited and by International Insurance Company of Hannover Limited for clinical negligence claims up to £5 million per year*
- Discretionary assistance which can provide you with support and representation at trust** and regulatory body disciplinary hearings and inquests, help in responding to complaints and assistance when dealing with the media
- A 24-hour advisory service for guidance on medico-legal and ethical issues
- MDU advice booklets covering areas such as complaints and confidentiality
- A copy of the regular MDU journal
- Discounts with a range of publishers and other organisations

A day is defined as a continuous 24 hour period in a calendar day, or part thereof. For example, if a member attends an event as a private paramedic for 3 hours, this counts as one day, or if that member attends two seperate 3 hour events in that calendar day, this also counts as one day.

Corporate Indemnity Solution
If you have established a company providing private paramedic services, the company as well as the individual paramedics working for it could be sued for clinical negligence.
The MDU's Corporate Indemnity Solution ensures that professional indemnity insurance is in place regardless of whether a claim is made against the company, its employees or both.
