Online risk assessment
Risk management is the process of identifying, assessing and reducing risk. It can be applied to general practice, to reduce the risk of harm to patients and staff.
The MDU's free online risk assessment tool enables you to manage risk in your practice. By answering a series of questions, it will help you to identify potential areas of risk and create an action plan to deal with them.
Complete with GMC guidance and MDU advice, the tool is designed to help you reduce the possibility of a complaint or claim.
New - Prescribing
Our latest online assessment looks at the risks associated with prescribing and covers important areas such as:
- Repeat prescribing
- Drug issues
- Practice nurse issues
- Common pitfalls
Features of the online risk assessment include:
- Extensive reference material - each question is supported by GMC guidance or MDU advice which explains the rationale behind it.
- Prioritised action plan - on completion you will receive a personalised action plan to address any areas of risk identified. The plan includes valuable risk management advice and is prioritised to enable you to focus on the essential points first.
- Online benchmarking - The benchmarking facility allows you to compare your results against the UK and Ireland average. You can also compare results against previously saved assessments, allowing you to chart your progress.
- CPD certificate - the modules count as evidence towards continuing professional development (cpd) and you will be provided with an online certificate as proof of completion.

NEW - Risk assessment for general practice - Prescribing
Prescribing is one of the most common tasks in general practice and occasionally mistakes can happen. In analysis of 790 settled claims against UK GP members over a six year period, 25% were directly related to errors in prescribing, monitoring or administration.
Risk assessment for revalidation - Part one
This covers four of the headings in the GMC's booklet Good Medical Practice addressing areas such as good communication, record keeping and handling complaints. Successful completion of the assessment will contribute towards your evidence in both the appraisal and independent routes to revalidation.
* The risk assessment tool will open in a new (pop-up) window. You will therefore need to disable any pop-up blocker or set it to allow pop-ups on the MDU website.
