What is risk management?

We are all familiar with the concept of risk and live with it to a varying extent in our daily lives. We can either accept risk as it is or take steps to minimise risk and keep ourselves and others as safe as possible. This active process is termed risk management and can be broken down into four key steps:

  1. Identify the risk
  2. Assess the frequency and severity of the risk
  3. Reduce or eliminate the risk
  4. Cost the risk

These simple principles can also be applied to health care.
