The DDU’s experienced team of in-house
solicitors specialise in clinical negligence and have a proven track
record of succesfully defending claims. They also work with the advisory
department on criminal cases, complaints to the regulatory bodies
and disciplinary proceedings.

over 90% of cases.
Charles Dewhurst LLB
Charles is head of Legal Services
and has worked in medical and dental law since 1976. He qualified
as a solicitor in 1978 and was a partner in private practice for
11 years before joining the MDU in 1993. He manages the in-house
department and assists dental members with a range of legal issues,
including clinical negligence claims and complaints to the GDC.
Joanne Brooks LLB MA
After graduating with a
law degree, Joanne obtained the LLM in Medical Ethics and Law from
King’s College London. Following training
in private practice, she joined the MDU’s in-house legal
department in 2000.
Victoria Wilson LLB (Hons)
Victoria qualified as a solicitor in 1994, and joined the MDU in 1995. Apart from several years spent in private practice, when she continued to specialise in medical and dental defence law, Victoria has worked for the MDU throughout her career.
Tamsin Thomas MA
Tamsin qualified as a solicitor in 1996, having previously obtained Master Degree in Medical Law and Ethics. Since then she has specialised in medical and dental law and joined the MDU in 1999 after three years in private practice.
Alexia Baston BA (Hons)
Alexia qualified as a solicitor in 2003 and worked in private practice for four years, specialising in personal injury and clinical negligence, before joining the MDU's in-house legal department in 2008.
Francine Read BSc (Hons) MA
Following a degree in Biochemistry and Physiology, Francine qualified as a solicitor in 1997. AFter obtaining a Masters Degree in Medical Law and Ethics from Kings College, London in 1998, Francine has specialised in medical law, working in private practice for a number of years before joining the MDU in 2009.
Jane Ensor LLB 

Jane qualfied as a solicitor in 2002 and specialised in medical defence law in private practice from that date. She joined the MDU in 2010 .
