Indemnity
The MDU differs from all other UK defence organisations in the way we provide indemnity to our members.
The MDU is the only mutual defence organisation in the UK to offer doctors indemnity on an insured basis.
This means that as a member you receive a professional indemnity insurance policy to cover clinical negligence claims. This is a contractual agreement that will always provide assistance within the terms of the policy.
Other UK defence organisations only provide support for claims at the discretion of their Board. This is called discretionary indemnity and means there is no contractual right to assistance and no contractual insurance policy.
The MDU believes discretionary support alone is no longer sufficient. Would you feel comfortable waiting until you had a car accident before finding out if your insurance company would cover you?
The insurance policy is underwritten by SCOR UK Company Limited (part of the SCOR group) and by International Insurance Company of Hannover Limited (part of Hannover Reinsurance Company). SCOR and Hannover Reinsurance Company are two of the world's leading reinsurance companies. By having two such significant institutions standing directly behind the policy, MDU members have access to even greater security.
